Training & Behavior Support

PAWS strongly recommends positive reinforcement, science-based training — using reward-based methods (treats, play, praise) rather than force, dominance, fear, or punishment. Research shows that reward-based training improves learning, strengthens your bond with your dog, and reduces fear and aggression.

If your dog is showing aggression, severe anxiety, or unsafe behavior, a veterinary behaviorist is often the best first step.

Why PAWS Recommends Owner-Involved Training

PAWS strongly recommends training programs that allow adopters to actively participate in their dog’s learning process. Many board-and-train programs rely on outdated or aversive techniques that can increase fear, suppress warning signals, or lead to setbacks once the dog returns home. Training alongside your dog allows you to see how techniques are used, ask questions, and build skills you can confidently continue in everyday life.

For this reason, prior approval from PAWS is required before enrolling a PAWS-adopted dog in a board-and-train program. Our goal is to support safe, humane training methods that set both dogs and adopters up for long-term success.

Recommended Trainers & Behavior Consultants

Adopters are no longer permitted to drop off their adopted dog at “board and train” facilities without prior permission from PAWS. The vast majority of board and train operations use outdated and potentially dangerous techniques. It is better for adopters to witness the training and learn from the trainer both for safety and educational reasons.

The trainers below use positive reinforcement methods and are familiar with common challenges faced by newly adopted dogs.
